How to Use a Gym Day Pass While Traveling

Everything you should check before visiting a gym abroad, from staffed hours and identification requirements to towels and indoor shoes.

Training while traveling should not require a long-term membership. Many gyms offer day passes, single-entry tickets or short-term access for visitors.

However, buying a gym day pass abroad can work differently from what you are used to at home. Opening hours, payment methods and visitor requirements can vary significantly between gyms and countries.

This guide explains what to check before you go.

1. Check the staffed hours

A gym may be open 24 hours a day without selling day passes 24 hours a day.

Many 24/7 gyms only allow visitors to purchase a pass while a member of staff is present. Outside staffed hours, entry may be restricted to existing members with an access card.

Always check the gym's website or contact the gym before traveling there.

  • Check reception or staffed hours, not only general opening hours.
  • Verify whether the pass can be purchased online.
  • Confirm whether you will receive a temporary access code or need to speak with reception.

2. Bring identification

Some gyms require a passport, national identity card or another official document before allowing a visitor to enter.

This is especially common when the gym needs to register temporary visitors or issue a temporary access card.

  • Bring your passport or national ID.
  • A digital photograph may not always be accepted.
  • Make sure the name matches the payment method used.

3. Bring a towel

Even when a towel is not mentioned online, bringing one is a good precaution.

Some gyms require visitors to place a towel on benches and machines. Others may rent or sell towels, but this cannot always be guaranteed.

It would be frustrating to reach the gym and be refused entry because you do not have one.

4. Check the indoor-shoe policy

Some gyms, particularly in parts of Northern Europe and Asia, require clean indoor training shoes.

Shoes worn outdoors may not be accepted inside the training area, especially during winter or wet weather.

  • Pack a clean pair of training shoes.
  • Do not assume your outdoor running shoes will be accepted.
  • Check the gym rules when traveling in countries with strict indoor-shoe policies.

5. Confirm what the day pass includes

A day pass does not always provide access to every part of the facility.

The gym floor may be included while classes, swimming pools, saunas or premium areas require an additional fee.

  • Gym floor access
  • Changing rooms
  • Showers
  • Lockers
  • Group classes
  • Swimming pool or spa facilities

6. Ask how lockers work

Some lockers are free, while others require a padlock, coin, card or additional rental fee.

When possible, carry a small padlock in your travel bag. It takes very little space and can be useful in gyms around the world.

7. Verify the payment method

Some gyms accept cash only, while others only accept cards or mobile payments.

International bank cards may occasionally be rejected by automated payment terminals or local booking systems.

  • Check whether payment is made online or at reception.
  • Carry a second payment method.
  • Confirm whether the displayed price includes taxes or registration fees.

8. Contact the gym when information is unclear

Day-pass policies change, and individual branches of the same gym chain may apply different rules.

A quick message through email, Instagram, WhatsApp or the gym's contact form can prevent a wasted journey.

DayPassGyms provides the information available for each listing, but visitors should still verify important details directly with the gym before going.
